Volunteers of the Week: Penelope Cupp and Maxx Plisco

by End Overdose

End Overdose is made possible by hundreds of volunteers working tirelessly across the country. Some of them are training attendees at national festivals on how to respond to an overdose, while others are packing naloxone kits in our office well into the evening hours. We want to shine a light on the people whose efforts make our resources free and accessible to all, so we’re excited to share our Volunteers of the Week: Penelope Cupp and Maxx Plisco!

"Penelope and Maxx have been incredibly dedicated volunteers, doing vital chapter work at the University of Colorado Boulder and consistently showing up for HQ at festivals like Lost Lands," says Chapter & Operations Coordinator Olive Younts. "As a reliable and dedicated pair, they lead with love for their community, through essential overdose prevention outreach."

Can you tell us about yourselves and your stories?

I’m from St. Louis Missouri and went to CU Boulder for undergrad. I’m now at University of Denver for law school. Penelope is from Asheville North Carolina, and also graduated form University of Colorado Boulder, where she got a bachelor's degree in accounting. She now has a full time position at RSM in Tampa, Florida, starting in October. We both help out with End Overdose when we can, we love going to shows at Red Rocks and snowboarding. Our favorite End Overdose event is Lost Lands!

What inspired you to volunteer for End Overdose?

A close friend of ours at CU Boulder passed away from an Overdose in 2023 and we both realized it was a much bigger issue than we thought, and young people are much more vulnerable to this type of thing and should be educated.

How and when did you and Penelope meet?

We met prior to End Overdose, Penelope started to volunteer and that’s how I learned about it and joined soon after. Through all the events we’ve attended we have definitely grown closer and bonded over helping the community, and now we do most events we sign up for together.

What’re your favorite memories of volunteering (together or separate) with End Overdose?

My favorite memory is at EDC Las Vegas. We were teaching large groups, and one guy I was talking to had a massive Invader Zim pearler/necklace on. I complimented him on it and without saying anything he took it off of his neck and put it onto mine, and then he said thank you for what we're doing and that it was mine now. Penelope’s favorite memory is tabling with AJ at the EDC camp booth. Penelope did a rapid training and AJ told her she did a great job.
