Pilates with a Purpose: Savvy and Strong

Exercise is one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves, whether it's for our physical or emotional wellbeing. This notion is exemplified by Atlanta-based, mindful movement instructor Savannah Taraxacum – known for her lifestyle movement Savvy & Strong. Since securing her yoga instructor certification in 2015, she's made a space for Atlanta residents to find their inherent strengths and evolve.

Savannah has also been directly impacted by the effects of the opioid crisis. After her brother Alex passed away from an overdose in 2021, she made it her mission to make a difference. That mission has been a serious success, culminating in a fundraiser she held for End Overdose's Atlanta chapter where the community came together and raised $5,555 for our chapter's outreach and resources.

We're immensely grateful for Savannah – who is now our newest Atlanta chapter member, taking the title of Fundraising and Events Lead – and her contributions to saving lives. We spoke with her about her background in mindful movement, the core mission of Savvy & Strong, and what she hopes to see for overdose prevention and response throughout the state of Georgia.

Can you tell us about your professional journey? What sparked your interest to teach mindful movement in 2015?

My journey into mindful movement started long before 2015. I grew up playing lacrosse and cheering, so movement was always part of my identity. I loved the energy and team dynamic, but over time, I realized I was craving something deeper than performance alone.

After a few years of a life-shifting yoga practice, I decided in 2015 to get certified so I could share this method with others. It wasn’t just about pushing harder, it was about intention, breath, nervous system awareness, and building strength from the inside out. For the first time, movement felt empowering rather than aesthetic.

With a degree in psychology and a corporate career in Human Resources, where I thrive in team management, development, and recruiting, I’ve always been passionate about understanding people and helping them grow. Teaching mindful movement became a natural extension of that passion.

I wanted to create spaces where people could feel savvy and strong, confident in their bodies, grounded in their power, and connected to themselves beyond the workout.

Because real strength isn’t just physical. It’s self-trust.

Why is it important to integrate multiple types of movement like yoga and HIIT Pilates into the workouts you offer? Is there one that stands out to you personally?

I believe our bodies, and our lives, require different things on different days. That’s why integrating multiple styles of movement like yoga and HIIT Pilates is so important.

Yoga teaches awareness. It builds breath control, nervous system regulation, and presence. HIIT Pilates builds muscular endurance, mobility, and stability. One helps you slow down and listen. The other challenges you to rise and push. Together, they create balance.

Physically, cross-training prevents plateaus and reduces injury risk. Mentally, it keeps movement engaging and sustainable. Emotionally, it allows you to meet yourself where you are, whether you need grounding or fire.

To me, that’s what being savvy and strong is about: knowing when to soften and when to step up.

If I had to choose one that stands out personally, it would be yoga, because it was the foundation that shifted my life and taught me how to connect inward. But HIIT Pilates taps into my athletic roots and love for intensity. It reminds me of the athlete I grew up as.

Ultimately, I don’t believe it’s either/or. The magic is in the integration.

What would you describe as the core mission of Savvy & Strong?

At its core, Savvy & Strong exists to help women build strength with intention, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

“Savvy” represents awareness, and, of course, it’s a little play on my name, Savannah. It’s about understanding your body, your energy, your patterns, and moving through life with clarity instead of autopilot.

“Strong” is the embodiment. It’s resilience. It’s mobility and stability. It’s confidence in your decisions. It’s walking into a room grounded in who you are.

The mission is to create spaces, through movement, community, and conversation, where women feel empowered to trust themselves. Not chasing aesthetic goals. Not shrinking. Not performing. But building sustainable strength that supports real life.

Savvy & Strong isn’t just a workout brand, it’s a mindset and a lifestyle. It’s about knowing yourself deeply and showing up authentically.

What inspired you to lead a fundraiser for End Overdose?

The inspiration to lead a fundraiser for End Overdose comes from a deeply personal place. My brother, Alex, passed away in February 2021 from a fentanyl overdose after struggling with addiction for over a decade. Losing him was devastating, but it also strengthened my resolve to make a difference.

I wanted to honor Alex’s life and spirit, his energy, his love for connecting with others, and his generosity, in a way that creates real impact.

Leading this fundraiser transformed grief into action. It brought our community together, spread awareness, and shone light on something that impacts more people around us than we often realize.

What was your community’s reaction like throughout the process of fundraising? And why is it important for community members like yourself to get involved?

The reaction to my fundraiser and fundraising events was incredible. So many people vulnerably shared how addiction and overdoses have impacted their lives, and it made me feel truly seen. I believe it’s so important to share these experiences so others can feel supported, raise awareness, and become inspired to take action.

I was also humbled and inspired by how many local businesses reached out to participate. Community members embraced this cause with such excitement and passion, and together, we raised $5,555, on Alex’s fifth death anniversary, making it a truly beautiful and successful fundraiser.

I feel grateful to be growing a platform and voice that allows me to cultivate community empowerment and create spaces that embrace authenticity. I hope it inspires others to join in. Coming together for a meaningful cause, sharing energy, and lifting each other up — that’s the true power of community.

What do you hope to see for the future of overdose prevention and response?

I hope to see overdose prevention and response continue to grow in awareness across all communities. I envision a future where naloxone is as common as first aid, in offices, purses, and homes, so that life-saving support is accessible to everyone.

I also hope to see more End Overdose chapters established on Georgia college campuses, creating networks of education, support, and action. Regular fundraising and community events are key to keeping awareness alive, not just in Georgia, but across the Southeastern region.

I’m thrilled to be joining the Atlanta chapter as the Fundraising and Events Lead, and I’m excited to get to work bringing our community together, raising awareness, and making an impact that truly saves lives.
